Earlier this year, while attending the Bluebeam Extreme conference I stopped by the DroneDeploy booth to see what they were doing. Whether it’s geo-tagged imagery, or expediting pre-construction site planning and design DroneDeploy is HOT. Their system work from bid to earthworks and will deliver survey-grade maps. You can even verify subcontractor work with automated cut/fill analysis and side by side comparisons. Here’s the video interview I captured. Best thing is they integrate with Bluebeam’s Studio Prime for a win-win!

Later in the year, I ran into them again at the 2019 Procore conference in Phoenix. Apparently they are the drone business most interested in integrations to popular construction solutions… they have over 80 integrations and apps completed. Have you been to their website yet?

If you want to reflect professionalism, remember to use Bluebeam Spell Check. Spell Check is a must do whether you use Word, Outlook or Bluebeam Revu and too many people skip the step. Actually it’s two steps. You can Spell Check your Markups and Form Fields, or Spell Check the Content.

Bluebeam Spell Check for Markups and Form Fields

When spell checking Markups and Form Fields, you have the opportunity to correct spelling errors; Spell checking PDF content will identify spelling errors, but does not offer a mechanism for changing a spelling (although in some cases you can use Edit Text to change a spelling).

Like in MS-Word, F7 is the keyboard shortcut to start the spell check for Markups and Form Fields. The long way is Go to Edit > Check Spelling > Check Spelling in Markups and Form Fields, not that you’ll ever need to know that again. Squiggly lines will appear beneath unrecognized words. You can then right click for replacement words to choose from.

Bluebeam Spell Check for Content

Bluebeam Spell check also has the ability to spell check content. Go to Edit > Check Spelling > Markup Spelling Mistakes. Sorry but Bluebeam didn’t include a shortcut key. Might I suggest creating a custom keyboard shortcut in Revu 2018 and higher, like Shift + F7 (FYI-That’s used for the Thesaurus in Word).

NOTE: As of the writing of this article, Spell Checker does not checking spelling in any custom columns.

Hope this all helps. Now go get ’em Bluebeamers!

For most Bluebeamers it’s critical to productivity in the field and makes for fabulous owner project deliverables. There are two types of hyperlinks and a few options that can make a huge difference in the experience you deliver to the project team. These 5 hyperlink tips in Bluebeam Revu will have everyone thanking you.

Hyperlinks for RFIs

To link to a reference document like an RFI, instead of using the hyperlink, use Edit Action. To do this, right click on the markup you made while the yellow handles are showing (typically a box with the RFI number in it) then choose Edit Action. Edit Action makes the hyperlink moves with the markup. A Standard hyperlink assigns the position on the sheet in Bluebeam Revu which creates orphaned links.

Visible Hyperlinks

To make a hyperlink stay visible all the time, check the Visible option on its Properties tab. Define a Color and a Line Width and Style to set a box around it. (I personally like the light blue with dashed lines around it to set off the hyperlink from highlights of the same color. You may want to then click Set as Default). This is an option in Batch Link as well so you can create them uniformly.

Hyperlink to Drawing Details

To create hyperlinks to a specific detail on a drawing sheet, first open the Links Tab, and Add a Place using the Snapshot View for each detail on the sheet. Be careful to name the Place uniformly (i.e. 9. Stair Detail, 8. Elevator Detail, etc.). Then use Text Search to locate each detail reference throughout the document (detail 8 on sheeet A302) where you can check all then select hyperlink checked so it links all occurrences at once. This also makes it easy to replace a detail when changes are made. Note: Batch Link will only link to the correct sheet, not the specific detail on a page.

Hyperlinks in Studio Projects

When linking between PDFs in a Studio Project, open both files and be sure to check out the file the hyperlink is being created in. You don’t have to check out the file being linked to, but you do need to at least open it.

Hyperlink Tips in Bluebeam Revu – Best Practices

When linking between PDFs, use Jump To instead of Open. When selecting the PDF from the Jump To dropdown menu, only PDFs that are currently open in Revu will be available.
