How do you make redlining PDFs and BIM collaborative?

Look to Archicad 21. When the Nemetschek Group acquired Bluebeam a few years ago I was expecting great things. They’ve delivered with the Bluebeam Connection in GRAPHISOFT’s ARCHICAD 21. Because they’ve created a common data environment, redlining PDFs and BIM becomes a seamless workflow.

The Bluebeam Reviewer Tool in ARCHICAD 21 introduces a simple palette which contains the commands that are most commonly used during the review process. With the reviewer, the Bluebeam Revu Markup entries become accurately positioned individual ARCHICAD markup entries based upon the original drawings. This completely eliminates the need to manually enter all PDF redlining into BIM and will significantly speeds up the RFI and RFC process by supporting round-trip workflows. Yes, create a PDF from ARCHICAD, add your redlining in Bluebeam Revu and bring the markups back into ARCHICAD 21’s design model. If you want to streamline your redlining processes, this is a game-changer. To coin a phrase, it’s Revu Voilà!

To see it working watch this video:

Bluebeam Revu has helped many AEC professionals project a professional business image on PDFs. Adding markups can be a bit tricky especially when it comes to text. Bluebeam Revu’s Text Box, Callout and Cloud+ Markups all use a text box that you can drag out to size. If you have a line width greater than zero set in the properties you’ll often have a box larger than the text you’ve typed (see left image above). This appears a bit messy and is easy and quick to fix. Here’s how you can have Bluebeam Revu auto size markups for you.

Using the new Revu 2016 shortcut Alt-Z, Revu will tidy them up by resizing them to fit tightly around the text. Rather than applying Auto-Size Text Box Alt+Z on each markup as you place them, just use Ctl+A to select them all and then Alt-Z to tidy them up all at once (as shown in the right image above).

When you want your text to automatically auto size, based upon the size of the text box you drag out, Revu has a setting for that too. In the textbox, callout and cloud+ markups properties tab, there’s a check box option next to the font (found under the appearance section) that will auto size fonts. This works great for those of us with bifocals, but if you aren’t careful, this may still leave you with text boxes that are longer than they need to be.

Using the auto font size in your markups and applying the auto size text box will cleanup all your text markups for that crisp, professional image in your construction, architecture and engineering firm’s PDF documents. This is perfect for redlining, collaborating in Studio Sessions and improving your communications with your team. That’s it. Two Bluebeam Revu Tips in one post. Now go get ’em Bluebeamers!

Today’s Bluebeam Tip is thanks to a North Carolina caller who’s company’s resident Revu expert was in the hospital. They needed an answer ASAP and asked, “Why are all my markups with text appearing sideways?” It didn’t matter what Markup she used: Typewriter, Text Box or Callout. They all turned sideways. I asked, “Have you turned the document?” She replied “Why, yes I did”.

How to Fix Markup Text that is sideways or upside down
Avoid using the Rotate View option. You can tell if someone has rotated the view by opening the Thumbnails Tab in the left panel. If you’ve rotated the view, the Page is not actually turned and appears in the Thumbnail in its original page orientation. Bluebeam places the markups according to the page’s orientation.

Instead use the Rotate Page option before placing markups. You can get to Rotate Pages in the Thumbnails Tab by right clicking on a single page (or CTRL-A for all pages). You can also get to it under Document | Pages | Rotate Page or use the shortcut CTRL-SHFT-R.

Rotate View is for display purposes, when you only need to temporarily look at the page in another orientation. To save everyone in the company time, rotate all your pages to the correct orientation and save the document. Then anyone else who views it won’t have to rotate the view or page again.

So what if you need something more elaborate? Bluebeam Revu has many line styles but did you know you can create your own?

Line Styles for paths, roadways, pipelines, fencing, railways, boundaries and borders are often used in illustrations and appear on construction plans. Custom line styles can be applied to Arrow, Ellipse, Line, Polyline, Rectangle, Polygon and Cloud markups. Use the custom Line Style editor to make your own custom line styles.

Custom line styles can be created using dashes, text, spaces, dots and vector graphics literally providing you with the option to create any shape or size. The custom Line Style editor gives you the ability to have multiple lines with varying characteristics that’s great for producing road patterns and other complex designs. Here’s a Bluebeam video on how to make your own line styles and share them with your peers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8ml0ch215o

Note: You can apply limited styles to the Dimension tool as well.

What unique line styles have you created? Email me a few you’re proud of and I’ll append them to this post (with a kudos to you and your firm)!

There are a couple ways to add multiple leader lines and a few extra tips below when working with Callouts:

Adding Leader Lines:
To add leader lines, right-click a Callout and select Add Leader.
or
Shortcut: Hold down the Shift key and click
the bend in the leader line. Then, click a location on the document to place the arrow of the new leader line.
